What's my history?

I’ve been formerly recognised as a Mexican breed for over 100 years but our origins doubtless date back much further! In fact, various archaeological depictions of us date back to BC times but it is all hazy. What does seem clear is that we descended from a breed known as the Techichi which were owned and bred by the Toltec civilisation of Mexico. We have been depicted at the famous ruins of Chichen Itza and the Great Pyramid of Cholula so we’ve seen some pretty amazing places. In modern times our path to globalisation started with our introduction into America. From there we have crossed borders and seas to become a multi-national breed of distinction.

What do I look like?

I really come in two forms – the smooth-coated and the long-coated. I’m also generally considered to be the world’s smallest breed of dog. Probably my most distinguishing feature is my ears, which are large and flared and set at the side of my head – all the better to hear you with! I come in lots of different shades and my eye colour will also change according to my coat colour.

What do I need from you?

I’m really pretty easy to take care of. I’m undemanding in terms of feeding, grooming and exercise.  I’m pretty intelligent and spirited so be sure to give me plenty of stimulation in the form of toys and activities.

What I will give in return

OK here’s a disclaimer: I’m not ideal for small children. Perhaps because of my size, they can be a bit rough with me and I am liable to snap out. I wish it wasn’t so, but I’m afraid it is. Once they’re a bit bigger then I’m probably fine. Although I am typically friendly with house visitors, I am able to distinguish intruders – so will be good at sounding the alarm. I do have excellent ears for the job remember!

How big will I get?

It’s not so much how big I’ll get but how big I won’t get. At its largest, my breed gets to around 9in. However it won’t be uncommon to see a 6in fully grown Chihuahua either. Weight wise I tend to average out at around 3.5lbs (1.5kg) but can vary by as much as a kilo up or down.

Famous owners?

So many to mention! Madonna, Reese Witherspoon, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and, in her day, the legend that was…Marilyn Monroe. Think only girls go for us? Former boxing tough-guy Ricky Hatton owns a chihuahua!

Want us to live with you?

We’re currently recruiting breeders and adopters to go here. Could that be you?
