Yorkshire Terrier

What's my history?

I’m the result of a multitude of crossings involving the Black-and-tan Terrier, the Skye Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont and the Maltese. I’m guessing a lot of this activity went on in Yorkshire, England! I was originally bred to fight and see-off rats; today I prefer not to fight – I’m a pacifist.

What do I look like?

You’ll often see me looking well groomed with a lustrous, flowing coat. I look great in the show ring and am frequently a winner. However my compact, long-coated appearance belies the terrier in me.

What do I need from you?

The Yorkshire Terrier coat needs a fair bit of loving care and attention so you will need to be a patient and regular groomer. Alternatively I guess you could have me clipped if you just want me as a pet.

What I will give in return

What I lack in stature I make up for in in attitude and aptitude. I love to play and be active so you can do the usual doggie stuff with me. Naturally I’ll be affectionate and loving with my family too.

How big will I get?

Yorkshire Terriers will grow to about 8in (20cm) tall and will weigh around 7lb (3kg). So I’m not too heavy duty.

How long should I be around for?

Hopefully a long time! We should get to 15 and some live up to 20 and beyond. They built us to last up in Yorkshire!

How big is our litter?

Breeding is not easy with us Yorkshire Terriers. Take great care and choose a nice small male. Hopefully you should get between 2-4 healthy little pups.

Famous owners?

Hugely popular with celebrities, including Natalie Portman, Orlando Bloom, Naomi Watts and Heather Graham.
