We come in three sizes (Toy, Miniature and Standard), so there’s a Poodle for everyone! Our origins dispel two myths some people may have of us. The first is that we are nothing other than a highly manicured show dog for Crufts and other such events. In fact, we were originally bred as a truffle hunter and a water retriever – our swimming ability is immense. Secondly, that we are a French dog. In fact, we originate from Germany, but were later taken to France.
What do I look like?
Depending upon how highly coiffured we are, you may see us looking like some kind of balloon twisted dog model. This is just one aspect of our breed. Behind the fur lies a strong dog from the neck, down through the deep-chest and our powerful loins. Our legs are long and well boned. Typically though, we are known for our coat, which is dense and profuse, with a harsh texture. We can be clipped into a multitude of patterns, including the Lion Clip and the Dutch Clip. The two clips most common to show Poodles are the Continental Clip and the English Saddle Clip. All solid colours are allowed.
What do I need from you?
This largely depends upon which size Poodle you acquire and your lifestyle. Our two smaller breeds are more suited to town life. The standard Poodle is a real country dog at heart and prefers to be frolicking in woodland – hunting truffles. Mainly, it’s about the coat however. Unlike most dogs, which have double coats, us Poodles have a single layer coat (no undercoat is present) composed of dense, curly fur that sheds minimally. Many people wrongly assume us to be hypoallergenic. This is not necessarily so (although we are not completely allergen free). We do shed, but instead of the fur coming off, it becomes tangled in our surrounding hair. This leads to matting without proper care. Poodle show clips require many hours of brushing and care per week, about 10 hours/week for a Standard Poodle. Pet clips are much less elaborate than show and require less maintenance. A pet owner can anticipate grooming us every six to eight weeks. Although professional grooming is often costly, we are easy to groom at home with the proper equipment.
What I will give in return
We radiate elegance, which is one of the reasons why we are such a show dog favourite. We carry ourselves very well, particularly our head. This means we are likely to attract lots of admiring glances. Above and beyond the look, we are highly intelligent dogs. In our darker past we have been prized as performing animals for circuses and stage shows. You will find almost all Poodles to be friendly if high-spirited dogs, that make great pets.
How big will I get?
Toy: under 11in (28cm) and 10lb (4.5kg); Miniature: 11in-15in (28cm-38cm) and 13lb (6kg); Standard: over 15in (38cm) and about 70lb (32kg).
How long should I be around for?
Typically: Standard Poodle – 12 years; Miniature Poodle – 14 years; Toy Poodle – up to 20 years.
How big is our litter?
Average litter sizes vary by dog: Toy is 3 pups, Miniature is 5, Standard typically 7.
Marilyn Monroe and Winston Churchill are our most renowned owners. John Steinbeck for those with a literary bent.
We’re currently recruiting breeders and adopters to go here. Could that be you?
