I might be small but I make up for that with a massive history. The Maltese Terrier has been around since the time of the Ancient Greeks. We’ve witnessed the Roman Empire rise and fall. We were also big around the Middle Ages. So we’ve seen it, done it and bought the t-shirt. Unsurprisingly we ended up in Malta, a wicked little island in the Mediterranean sea; brought there by Phoenician traders.
What do I look like?
How I look really depends upon what I’m used for. As a housemate, I’m a chilled out little dog with lots of white fur, which could be trimmed. If I’m needed for the show ring then you’ll see me in full regalia – beautifully manicured flowing locks and probably a bow or two in my hair. Maltese Terriers have got a black nose and dark brown eyes that wear an intelligent expression – so I’m told. My ears are long, well-feathered and pendulous, as is my cheeky, arched tail.
What do I need from you?
Well this fine coat doesn’t groom itself so I’m going to need a good array of brushes and scissors and a lot of patience and care from your good selves. Other than that, I’m a pretty easy-going little pal in good health – to survive as long as we have you have to be in fine fettle.
What I will give in return
I’ll be honest, I’m generally something of a ladies man/girl. So If you’re a big burly bloke that drinks pints of beer and shoots pool with his mates, we might not be the ideal match. However I love being part of a family. I’m a great mover with a free-flowing, gliding action. So you’ll get lots of admiring glances from passers-by. You could even try and teach my to moondance! I’m alert and have great hearing so I’ll let you know if we have intruders – you can take care of it from there.
How big will I get?
I’ll be massive in your heart but small on the ground. I make it to around 10in (25cm) and weigh in around 4lb-6lb (2kg-3kg).
How long should I be around for?
Maltese Terriers typically live for between 12 and 15 years.
How big is our litter?
We don’t have big litters – maybe 3 to 5 puppies.
Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon and Natalie Imbruglia
We’re currently recruiting breeders and adopters to go here. Could that be you?
