Many of you will know me from my movie exploits along with my other 100 brothers and sisters. However, my story dates back way further than that. During the Regency period of Britain, I was used widely to run alongside carriages. In America I’ve been used to run in front of horse-drawn fire engines. Why all of this running you might ask? Well historians will say it was due to my endurance and stamina. I’d prefer to associate it to my dashing good looks!
What do I look like?
I’m sure I don’t need to go into too much detail on what I look like. However you might assume my spots are only black. They usually are, but I can equally be seen with tan spots – on white, of course. I’m a strong, muscular dog with fairly long pendulous ears.
What do I need from you?
Well as my history shows, running is a big part of my life so I need the freedom to do that. I can walk too of course, although preferably at a brisk pace. Once trained I’m a great sporty friend so please invest the time in a bit of training.
What I will give in return
I’ll help keep you fit with all of my energy and enthusiasm. Whatever your relationship status, I’ll keep you company on the cold, wintry nights. But if you’re single, I’ll help you find a soul-mate as people will think you’re totally cool to own a Dalmatian. If you’re married, I’ll listen intently when you tell me all your woes. Of course I may have to do the same for your other half too. But what is said in the shed, stays in the shed!
How big will I get?
I’m a fairly big dog and will grow to about 24in (61cm) in height and weigh in at around 50lb-55lb (22kg-25kg).
What's my health like?
Generally good, but two specific issues I need to raise. Firstly, we are prone to deafness. This is not me making excuses for when we run off against your will! We seriously are prone to this but it is testable. Also, we can be predisposed to a uric acid metabolism condition. This means we are susceptible to stones in our urinary tract – flippin’ painful, I can tell you! You will need to make sure we wee regularly and have access to lots of fresh water – as should every dog!
Marlon Brando, Ingrid Bergman, Gloria Estefan and John Wayne. How’s that for a list?!
