We are part of the Molosser dog group, developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser. This was a dog of Mastiff descent, similar to the Great Dane and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. During World War I, we were co-opted for military work, acting as a messenger dog, pack-carrier, attack and guard dog. It was not until after World War II that we became the popular global breed of today (particularly in the UK and US).
What do I look like?
Boxer dogs are the loveable rogues of the dog world – hard in appearance but soft on the inside. We’re squarely built and active. Our head is short and square with wrinkled skin. Our muzzle is broad and deep with an undershot lower jaw. Our ears are cropped in America and Germany but un-cropped in the U.K. Our nose is black and eyes a dark and alert brown. We have quite a short body but fairly long, muscular legs with cat-feet. The Boxer coat is short and glossy.
What do I need from you?
I confess that us Boxer dogs need a firm hand as we can be quite a handful. I suppose you need to remind us who is the boss – and that’s us. Only joking, we know it’s you really! You need to be careful of us around other large dogs – for some reason we don’t always take to them. What you maybe don’t realise is we get quite a lot of teasing verbal abuse from them – “stiff lower lip!” is a particular favourite. Surprisingly we’re much better with smaller (more respectful) dogs. Because of our brachycephalic head, we do not do well with high heat or humidity, so give us a break in these conditions.
What I will give in return
I know it may not look so from our sad, dopey expression but we’re actually something of an extrovert! We’re pretty fearless and confident, incredibly loyal to family and friends and mostly brilliant with children. We are wary of strangers and therefore make a great guard dog.
How big will I get?
Male Boxer dogs can grow up to about 25in (63cm) and weigh around 70lb (32kg). Females will typically be 2in shorter and 10lb lighter.
How long should I be around for?
Our typical life span is around 9-10 years.
How big is our litter?
On average Boxer dogs will have 6-8 puppies.
Justin Timberlake, Jodie Foster and Shirley Maclaine to name just three.
We’re currently recruiting breeders and adopters to go here. Could that be you?
