Today us Bearded Collies are very popular with you humans. We’re admired both for our work within farming communities and as pets. Historically, our breed potentially dates back as far as the 16th century when Polish Lowland Sheepdogs were brought to Scotland by visiting sailors. Crossing those sheepdogs with local herding dogs gave rise to a beautiful bearded animal.
What do I look like?
I defy anyone not to think Bearded Collies are anything but adorable! Who couldn’t fall in love with a bearded head, kind eyes and a lolling tongue poking out permanently? We make a perfect family pet. From a purist perspective, our coat needs to be long, the head broad with a fairly long muzzle and ears moderately large. Our bodies are generally quite sturdy with strong loins and our tails are carried low with a slight upward curl at the end.
What do I need from you?
Like the best things in life, Bearded Collies will need some degree of care. With all that hair and all the outdoorsy stuff on our agenda, it is inevitable that we are going to need a bit of grooming. However you can be sure we will sit patiently and tolerant of your every stroke, even if you do pull a little on our matted bits.
What I will give in return
We have a temperament very much in keeping with our appearance. You may think we know more than we’re letting on. In fact you might say we look like the canine equivalent of Dr Seuss’s The Lorax! We are an active, self-confident and fun-loving dog. If you want us to work, we’ll do that too.
How big will I get?
Typically 21in-22in in height and about 40lb-55lb (18kg-25kg) in weight.
How long should I be around for?
Lifespan for a Bearded Collie is around 12-14 years.
We’re currently recruiting breeders and adopters to go here. Could that be you?
