The Airedale Terrier is the largest of all terrier breeds and have been known as the King of Terriers. I originate from Yorkshire in England and my ancestry is a curious mix of both terrier and hound. Whilst it’s obviously great to tower above all of my fellow terriers, there is one downside. All terriers like to go underground but when I try I inevitably get stuck. In the past this has seriously handicapped my usefulness although I did learn to specialise in guard duties.
What do I look like?
I guess I closely resemble a giant teddy bear – the sort you’d be pleased to win at the funfair. However I do find this resemblance something of a jibe because I’m actually a pretty active dog. Accordingly I’m muscular with small ears with long fluffy legs and a docked tail.
What do I need from you?
I know all dogs like a scent or two, but along with my Bloodhound cousin, I can take it to another level. Therefore give me plenty of sniffing opportunities and I’ll be happy as Larry. I love guarding so expect me to ward of all house suitors of the delivery persuasion. I like to eat but I’m far from greedy. Oh and I love families.
What I will give in return
I’ll try to give you a lot of laughs but please laugh with me not at me – I’m a serious dog you know! I might not be able to reduce your house insurance but I’ll guard it with my life. I’m intelligent and courageous so you should enjoy having me around.
How big will I get?
Well Airedale Terriers are not called the ‘King of Terriers’ for nothing. Expect me to get to 23in-24in (58cm-61cm) and weight in at around 45lb (20.5kg). Pretty heavy for a funfair dog!
How long should I be around for?
We have an average lifespan of 12 years.
How big is our litter?
Quite big. Airedale Terriers average about 9 pups.
None other than the Duke John Wayne as well as US presidents Coolidge and Wilson.
We’re currently recruiting breeders and adopters to go here. Could that be you?
